Web Hosting Provider Hostinger Warns of Data Breach which might Impact 14 Million Customers
Hostinger says the unauthorized access to a database occurred last Thursday. And, that it reset user passwords as a “precautionary measure.”
The company wrote on its official blog, the following about the data breach:
“On August 23rd, 2019 we have received informational alerts that one of our servers has been accessed by an unauthorized third party. This server contained an authorization token, which was used to obtain further access and escalate privileges to our system RESTful API Server. This API Server is used to query the details about our clients and their accounts.”
The hosting provider also stated the API database in question stored approximately 14 million customer records. Also, the company says it’s been in contact with law enforcement.
Customers believed impacted have already receive an email, instructing them to reset their passwords. Hostinger states no financial data was exposed during the compromise. But, at least one person disagrees, alleging customers’ financial information can be accessed by the infiltrated API.
