A new WhatsApp message forwarding limit goes into effect to help curtail the dissemination of false information across the platform…
WhatsApp is taking yet another step to curb the spread of misinformation on its site. The company just rolled out a new policy intended to better stymie the passing on of false news.
WhatsApp Message Forwarding Limit Introduced
The new WhatsApp message forwarding limit restricts users to 20 contact recipients at at time. Meanwhile, that limit is further restricted to just 5 people in India. This follows the company’s introduction of labels on forwarded messages, along with a $50,000 offer to researchers to help solve its fake news problem. Additionally, the company is removing the forwarding button which previously appeared next to images and video.
It’s making these moves after users spread false information through its app, resulting in lynch mobs leading to the death of a dozen people. But, the messaging service isn’t solely relying on its digital product. WhatsApp took out newspaper ads in India as PSAs:
WhatsApp is a very popular communications service. In fact, it’s one of the most used and successful products Facebook owns. Currently, it claims over 1.5 billion users across 180 countries. In India alone, there are more than 200 million users.
