WhatsApp is working on a way to add new contacts to its messaging platform via QR code scan, according to a recent analysis of the latest beta version…
Facebook messaging subsidiary WhatsApp is apparently in the midst of adding a new tool to its mobile app. Spotted by WABetaInfo, there’s a new option that adds support for using QR codes to add new contacts. If it makes it to wide, public release, it will make having to manually enter phone numbers by hand a thing of the past.
WhatsApp QR Code Add Contact Feature Spotted in Beta Code
Right now, testers see a small QR code on their settings pages. It allows would-be contacts or friends to scan it to immediately grab their contact information. But, it’s not a free-for-all. People can revoke QR codes at any time, so this definitely lessens the chances of being abused. (On the other hand, it will put an end to giving out fake phone numbers.)
This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has used QR codes for the good of its users, either. The company used the tech to let its users long into the desktop client without having to go through a longer process. Of course, just because it’s present in the newest beta version doesn’t mean that it’s guaranteed to make its way out to everyone using the service.
