WhatsApp Status section ads will indeed come to the platform, for the company to monetize its mobile product and for businesses to increase their reach…
After a few years of persistent rumors, it’s finally happening. WhatsApp will monetize its app by selling ads. Vice-president Chris Daniels tells Outlook India:
“We are going to be putting ads in ‘Status.’ That is going to be [the] primary monetisation mode for the company as well as an opportunity for businesses to reach people on WhatsApp.”
The WhatsApp Status section is the platform’s version of Instagram Stories (which is seriously winning the market share war for that particular format.)
WhatsApp Status Section Ads Confirmed
This shouldn’t come as any surprise. Facebook owns WhatsApp — which a large number of people don’t even know. (Facebook acquired WhatsApp in February 2015 for a purchase price of $16 billion: $4 billion in cash and $12 billion remaining in Facebook shares. Facebook bought Instagram three years earlier in 2012 for $1 billion.)
Unsurprisingly, users are taking to sites like Reddit to voice their concerns with the introduction of ads on WhatsApp.
Regardless of how people feel about the change, it’s here and will come to the site. However, at this time, it’s unknown when the ads will debut. Some reports suggest the new WhatsApp Status section ads will appear at the beginning of next year.
